Kokoda Trek Scholarship recipients 2026 - Bede and Rose
In 2026, we launched our Kokoda Trek Scholarship program, designed to take secondary-aged students on the Kokoda trek to explore the history and sacrifices made by those who served. Our inaugural recipients were Bede Challis, Leongatha Secondary College - Year 11 student and Rose Bowler, Mary McKillop Regional Catholic College - Year 11 student.
This initiative aims to cultivate a profound appreciation for the past while fostering resilience and leadership skills among young participants. Each year, a chosen group of students embarks on this transformative journey, accompanied by experienced mentors who share insights into the historical significance of the Kokoda Track.
As they navigate the challenging terrain, students gain firsthand experience of the hardships endured by soldiers during World War II, while also developing camaraderie and personal growth. The program has received praise for its ability to inspire the next generation, encouraging them to honor and remember the sacrifices made by those who came before them, while also equipping them to confront their own future challenges with courage and determination.
Throughout the year the Leongatha RSL fundraises to be able to send students on this adventure, fully paid for. If you would like to make a donation please get in touch with our friendly team at the RSL on 56622747 or hello@leongatha-rsl.com.au
